The Powers of Lostboycrow

Lostboycrow is expanding the defined lines of genres with his pop minded vocals and his dark love affair with the world of modern R&B.  Scrimshaw recently had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Lostboycrow right before his EP Sigh for Me was released into the music stratosphere.  The album is pure genius with Lostboycrow drawing inspiration from all aspects of his life to create silky beats and lyrics that evoke emotional electricity.  Listen to the album below and check out the interview to get to know the man behind the music.

Scrimshaw Collective (SC): Hey Lostboycrow, thank you so much for getting back in touch with us! We’re super stoked to be chatting with you!

Lostboycrow (LBC): Thank you guys, I appreciate you reaching out. It really means a lot what you guys have to say about my music; I appreciate your enthusiasm about the music!

We’re big music geeks, and are truly excited about the year ahead in music, especially yours! We first heard your single “Love Won’t Sleep” featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist, and initially, thought… who the hell is this guy? The beat is sick! The fact you were on that is epic.

Thank you so much - Yeah, Spotify has been awesome!

We can only imagine Spotify has been a good outlet for you, or are you more of a SoundCloud guy?

Its hard to say if its me, or if its just the way things are shifting in how people discover music. It seems like most people are very SoundCloud heavy, especially for a lot of music blogs, and it’s been huge for me this year.  Whereas with my new EP coming out, Spotify has really come into the picture the past couple of months, and has become a huge resource for people finding my music.

Ah absolutely, both platforms are huge for discovering music nowadays. And it seems like you’ve got a big week with the release of your EP “Sigh For Me.”

That’s right - everything is finally coming out on Wednesday January 13th, apart from the three singles that you may have heard already, including “Powers,” “Talk Back to Me,” and “Love Won’t Sleep” plus two new ones, which I was able to feature some artists on!

We were actually just looking up your featured artists, Jon Waltz & Skizzy Mars, are these close friends of yours in the industry, or are these new collaborations?

It was amazing working with the incredibly talented artist and writer Jon Waltz, who I didn’t really get to know until we were collaborating on the song, but got to know him a bit more while recording eventually stemming a strong friendship from there. Art is all about connecting, and so when you’re working with people, you obviously want to be connected and into what they’re doing, so I’ve been able to form a friendship with Jon through that. And Skizzy Mars is another feature, of whom I’m a huge fan. He was super into the song, and it was cool to kind of start a relationship out of this song as well. Plus the song itself is kind of about becoming an artist, finding the inspiration within yourself, the dynamic of “ok, now I’m an artist” not just a person that people have told me I am my whole life. It was cool to bring Skizzy in on that one, who’s such an interesting artist & human being.

It’s really cool that you’re collaborating with artists that you not only respect, but you ones that can push your boundaries as an artist. You’re creating something new, and its essential to have new ideas. There’s a lot of places where you have to break the mold in this day and age, and a lot of your music seems to be doing that. In one of your descriptions online, you’re “creating a dark love affair with modern R&B,” so do feel that you connect to a specific genre overall, or are you experimenting to see what comes next?

I mean its kind of experimenting, as its a culmination of everything that I’ve been into. With music, you have it be sincere, and obviously there are different levels of talent but at the end of the day, people just want to hear something sincere; something that strikes a chord within themselves, that they can’t quite put a finger on, but it makes you feel a certain type of way.  And I’ve felt that way with a lot of different genres. I’ve been in punk and metal bands, but have gotten really heavy into R&B over the years. So its just kind of like a culmination of always chasing that feeling of what exactly it is that makes you feel alive. And I think music is immortal in that way. I think we each experience immortality when we listen to a really special song and I’m just so chasing that feeling with each song I put out.

When I first started, I wanted to get into electronic music (not necessarily in the EDM sense), but create that driving beat that really grooves, that people can not only think and appreciate the intellect behind, but also have a good time to, and dance! It’s a combination of all of those things. I want people to resonate with the work, relate my songs to their own stories, and I want it to feel good when they listen to it whether you’re in the club or you’re blasting it in your homies’ car going 80 down the freeway - it doesn’t matter. I will say that R&B has meant a lot to me over the past few years, and there is that R&B/hip-hop element especially in my features. I don’t think these artists I worked with are bound by any genre, but they definitely have more of a hip-hop/R&B leaning, and it’s something that I appreciate, and will always try to bring in on my collabs.

I think that your music, 100% makes people feel good.  And as we’re not always driving down the freeway at 80 MPH, your music always triggers a foot tap on the early morning subway commute.

Haha, that’s awesome. So are you guys in New York?

We’re actually between New York City & San Diego. A bicoastal collective exploring both coasts and everything in between. Looking to get up to the Pacific Northwest sometime soon.

Yeah definitely, I’m from Portland, so I got you there. Oregon is one of the best places to explore! It’s probably good now for Scrimshaw that you’re in separate locations, so you can cover more ground.

Totally! We’re able to reach similar audiences in very different locations, which has been really awesome. So you said you were from Portland, but are now in California?

Yeah I was born in Portland, and moved down to LA about a year and a half ago. LA is what I call home. It’s been so welcoming and rejuvenating as an artist.

So can we assume that LA has influenced your work, from the weather to the people, to the vibe down there?

Definitely, I would say that without question the people and the vibe in and of itself have been such a positive experience thus far. Working with other incredible musicians and producers! I’ve lived all over the city, and have been able to experience truly every part of LA. A huge influence in the music I make is from the people I’ve met and the way they've inspired me. Portland is a very culturally rich place, but it’s just not quite the same, especially in what I’ve wanted to do.  LA has been the perfect setting for me to do what I want.

In talking about different cities, are you keeping your shows in the California area this year, or are you going to be heading around the country a little bit?

Honestly, everything’s pretty open right now, but I’m planning on traveling quite a bit as I think we’re at that point now. I’ve been playing LA for a decent time now, and we’ve this big EP release show Wednesday January 13, which is going to huge! Then after that, it looks like we’ve got a couple gigs out of town, and hopefully a proper tour this spring or summer.

That’s great news, and good to hear you’ll be traveling – make your way to NYC! For us when we listen to your music it’s almost like a story, so to follow you along a potential tour, we’re curious to see what kind of music would come out of that trip.

Me too, and thank you for that! That really resonates with me and means a lot. I was just reminded yesterday with the misfortune of David Bowie’s passing, of what an amazing storyteller he was and what a lost art that’s become. I say it all the time when I talk to people about my music, I really can’t stress storytelling enough, because that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day. I think as artists, whether you’re a painter or whomever, you have a really special opportunity to tell stories in ways that history books really could never do justice, or quite capture the truth however factual they may be.  So that means a lot to hear.

Well said, and very true! As we’ve all been thinking about Mr. Bowie’s unfortunate passing, was he a strong influence for you, and if so, are there any other artists that’ve been influential in your work?

Oh man, of course Bowie was a huge influence! I think artists are confined by mediums sometimes you know, you’re an singer, you’re an actor, whatever, but I think David Bowie was a true artist across the board, which is something that I’m trying to draw from as well. But yeah, I think the biggest influences of the lyrics and sounds that you hear now are with my love for the Arctic Monkeys and Alex Turner specifically, who’s an incredible - INCREDIBLE - lyricist and writer. And then Frank Ocean; Frank’s music has done things to me I can’t even begin to describe. I think when I heard Channel Orange, and then went backwards into his catalogue from there, that was a huge turning point for me as a singer and a way to sing stories. Although these artists are a little bit more modern, they’ve had a timeless effect on the music that I’m creating now, and will probably always be creating. But also Brian Wilson, and the Beach Boys - which I grew up listening to with my parents, so I think those are the big ones!

The quote on your SoundCloud bio reads “an idea that pays homage to new beginnings and a poignant heritage,” and Frank Ocean is a perfect example of that, who’s such a cool new twist on a classic sound that a lot of people can get behind.

Yeah, totally agree, and he’s been such a huge inspiration for that reason. He’s been a great 21st century version of the great R&B signers of past times. He’s so traditional yet forward thinking at the same time, which is the most inspiring thing about him. He draws from those familiarities, and those classic/timeless sounds and feels, in the way that singers just used to really fucking sing! And today, I think unfortunately that can get lost in a lot of the production. That’s what great about Frank is that you can understand what he’s singing about, even if you didn’t understand any of the words.  He’s just so powerful in that way.

Speaking of production, we noticed the label “Sexy Electric” on your Instagram. Is that the label your EP is going to be on?

No actually, but they are very dear friends of mine, that I met in the beginning of last summer through another fantastic artist Alma. We started working together as more of a collective, but this new EP is actually independent. However, I couldn’t have made this without the help of my friends there at Sexy Electric; it’s been really nice to have that collective friendship sonically.

So they helped more on the production side then?

Yep! Brian Child and Marø who produced the EP, we did everything together! They are co-founders of Sexy Electric, along with help from DJ Kill Paris.

Didn’t we see Kill Paris do a remix of one of your songs Spotify?

Yeah, he did, he remixed my first song “Powers,” which was awesome because he’s incredibly talented. We’ve since become really good friends!

Ok, so speaking of remixes, do you like being in the studio or being on stage more?

Oooh, that’s a great question!  I don’t even know if I could ever answer that! I guess off the top of my head, I enjoy being on stage more because it’s more enjoyable, whereas the studio has this beautiful labor-of-love. The studio is a very magical place, but I think I have to say stage because that’s where it all comes together! Reliving the triumphs and pains, your highs and lows; the stage is pretty hard to beat!

For us, going to concerts is the best, but then again listening to that one song in your head phones can be just what the doctor ordered. As we’re not performers, it’s fascinating to hear your take on it. As we’ve noticed on your Instagram page, there are a lot of wings in your photos + blue stripes over your eyes, and we were wondering if these allude to your name and if you could talk a little bit about that.

Yeah, to put it simply, the name has a lot to do with storytelling and dreaming actually. The roots are actually from the Native American culture first nation, from a tribe called the Crow in Montana. I grew up loving their culture so much and wanted the name to pay homage to that. The Crow are an amazing culture that revolves around dreaming and seeing a visions for your tribe and those around you. There’s not a more beautiful image to be an artist, and help dream for those around you, which gives a quick synopsis of the name. The wings though in the pictures, obviously represent the wings of crow, but I’ve added these wings to remind everyone that there’s a bigger better version of yourself - and that we all have that. Then the blue streak over my eyes, represents that we all see our worlds through different lenses, sharing and experiencing perspectives as we do. LostBoyCrow is as real as it gets for me. Some people call me LostBoy, some LBC!

Wow, that’s an awesome reason! Now, we’ve got a question for you, which three words would you choose to describe how you’re feeling for the release of this new EP and 2016 as a year in general? We’re just so excited for 2016 in music, especially to see how you develop as an artist!

I’ve got to say 1) Thankful, because of all the people who helped me create what I did; obviously 2) Excited, because in my mind the possibilities for this year are endless; and I think all at the same time, 3) Ready, as I think I’m really just ready. Everything from this past year has taught me to be ready, and get this on the road!

Yeah, ready to spread those wings!

Yeah, haha, ready to spread those wings!

Well thank you so much for everything and we really appreciate your time and excitement to chat.  We’re looking forward for the EP and everything else that’s to come!

Definitely, thank you guys so much for reaching out.  I’ve enjoyed talking with you and you’ve asked some amazing questions; I’m excited to have a feature with you!

Scrimshaw Sessions ➳ 10 Favorites of 2015

With 2015 coming to a close, Scrimshaw looks back at its year in music.  While 2015 was filled with hits after hits that expanded the definition and boundaries of modern music and genres, we somehow narrowed it down to our Top 10 Favorite Songs of 2015!  With NYE around the corner, we wanted to make sure your musical cognition was at an all time high and your playlists were in peak form.  So, turn up the volume, start scrolling, listening, expand your mind, and let the music flow take you into 2016.  Happy New Year everyone!

1) "Fantasy"
Alina Baraz & Galimatias

Collaborating via Soundcloud from other sides of the planet, Alina Baraz & Galimatias, created an EP Urban Flora and the world rejoiced.  Baraz (a Los Angeles American based songwriter) connected with Galimatias (a Danish producer), and successfully fused their relaxed electronic styles to create not only an amazing EP, but overall eight banging singles!  One could say their most popular song “Fantasy” changed their lives, and we think it did just that.  The seductive tune lures you in with Baraz’s voice, and boasts a fantasia inspired sound that kept our speakers blaring all year long.

2) "R.I.P. 2 My Youth"
The Neighbourhood

After The Neighbourhood had a monster 2014 with their chart topping song, "Sweater Weather", we were hoping that this California based alt-rock band would continue to create these darker catchy jams.  They delivered, and were firing on all cylinders, when "R.I.P. 2 My Youth" was made.  Fresh off their 2015 released album, "Wiped Out!" is a must-listen from top to bottom ending with one of our favorite and most played songs this year, "R.I.P. 2 My Youth".  Treat yourself, and listen to all of it.

3) "Lit"
Bas feat. J. Cole, K-Quick

Straight Fire.  Bas, a Queens, NY based rapper, is on the serious rise to power with his EP Last Winter under his belt.  If being J.Cole's protégé doesn't already speak volumes, then his lexicon and lyrical silkiness proves that Bas is meant for Hip Hop.  Creating one of our favorite hip hop songs of the year, "Lit" ft. J.Cole and KQuick, is an absolute hit, that should be turned up to maximum volume.

4) "Don't Wanna Fight"
Alabama Shakes

If you haven’t already heard of the Athens, Alabama based quartet, then the actual likelihood that you’ve actually been living under a rock is quite high.  The musical powerhouse, Alabama Shakes, has been officially on the scene since 2009, releasing their first full length album Boys & Girls in 2012, they then graced us with their second album Sound & Color this past April, and we are forever grateful.  The funky soul-rock blended track “Don’t Wanna Fight” accentuates Brittany Howard’s astounding voice, and provides a great look into how the group has developed into they second feature album.

5) "Real"
Years & Years

There is no doubt that Years & Years has invaded your eardrums this year with their electropop / R&B music and style.  This British based trio had a meteoric 2015 combining their insane vocals with beats and sounds that seem to be from multiple generations.  "Real" is an incredible example creative genius and why genres and labels are being broken in today's day in music.  From the beat to the hook, "Real" is going to have you jamming so hard that it will be impossible not to listen to it again and again.  Their album Communion is a must-listen, which is available on Spotify.

6) "Middle"
DJ Snake feat. Bipolar Sunshine

DJ Snake is most known in these past two years for "Lean On" and "Turn Down for What", but in our opinion, this tops them both.  "The Middle" by DJ snake is without a doubt the definition of a banger and will make even those who don't dance, bob their heads as the beat drops.  Bipolar Sunshine's voice and lyrics are mesmerizing and completely captured and combined with DJ Snake's drop, that is sure to brighten your day.  Listen to this song with your window's down, shades on, and volume turned to 10.

7) "Hunger"
Sam Sure

Recording with the London independent based label, Black Butter Records, just as Jess Glynne, Rudimental, and Clean Bandit have done, Sam Sure released his single “Hunger” and his popularity soared!  The UK based artist toured with another successful trio on our list, Years & Years, and seems to be having a wild ride.  The track “Hunger” loops an addicting melody with fantastic lyrics that begs to be repeated.  This tune was made for headphone city-sidewalk cruising, and we can bet that Sam Sure is only to get bigger and better.  Make sure to check out his new single “Me & You” also available on his Spotify or Soundcloud.

8) "Simple Things"
Miguel

There are certain artists in every generation that just embody raw talent and sex-appeal; Miguel is one of those musicians.  "Simple Things" is the perfect example of  R&B and it exemplifies Miguel's swagger and smooth vocals. The more his discography grows, the more Miguel solidifies himself as a force of modern music.  His recent album Wildheart is genius and even though this cd was played on repeat, we realized that "Simple Things" is one song that stands out and speaks so truthfully on the important things in life.  We implore you to listen to his whole catalogue, but if nothing else listen to "Simple Things" and see why it was on our top 10 list of 2015.

9) "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)"
Jamie xx feat. Young Thug, Popcaan

The talented Jamie Smith has been making a name for himself in the music world, firstly with the group The xx, but has more recently been producing and collaborating with a slew of artists under his solo name Jamie xx.  Through his impressive electronic producing skills, and the release of his solo album, In Colour, Jamie xx has received a Grammy nomination for best Electronic/Dance album.  The album has a handful of songs featuring other artists, including Young Thug and Popcaan on the mega-track “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times).”  If you don’t start moving your body to this song, you might need to get something checked out; the beat begs for dancing and guarantees good times had by all who listen.

10) "Say My Name"
ODESZA feat. Zyra

The official music video for “Say My Name” by ODESZA from the album 'In Return’ directed by Ian Pons Jewell starring Stephanie Hunt. Arguably the best musical pair to breakthrough into the electronic world, the Seattle based duo, Odesza, took over the past two years, with a long list of singles, two full studio albums, EPs, a bunch of remixes and hearty collaborations.  You can’t go wrong with any of their songs, but the track that blew us away in 2015 was “Say My Name” featuring the beautiful voice of Zyra.  Catchy lyrics, plus rhythmic drums resulted in a dream-like ballad for the ages, and has kept everyone wanting more.  Check out their site to download their personal app, full discography and cities for their 2016 tour!

9) Troye Sivan

Troye Sivan is getting started.  ‘Happy Little Pill’ is the first single by Sivan, the 19-year-old Perth artist who’s set to confound expectations with the release of his forthcoming debut EP, TRXYE. Due to drop on August 15, TRXYE offers up five tracks of rich, atmospheric pop: a genre-smashing blend of beats, ballads, and influences – a sonic tapestry drawing from a love of Lana Del Rey and Lorde, Frank Ocean to Haim. Realised alongside emerging Perth production duo SLUMs and the studio skills of mixers Tom Elmhirst and Jason Cox (who’ve shaped hits for Gorillaz, Adele, Empire Of The Sun and many more), TRXYE is the sound of a young artist announcing himself. Troye has developed a huge online profile via his videos/vlogging, but 'Happy Little Pill' and TRXYE see him confidently defining a sound and aesthetic all his own. Fans have already had a taste of Troye’s music via 2013’s ‘The Fault In Our Stars’, a track revisited and reworked on TRXYE. The song is already a sleeper hit selling 100,000 around the world, with all proceeds from the song donated to a Perth children’s hospital. As the lead track on TRXYE, ‘Happy Little Pill’ is a heady introduction: all airy, wilful glitches, and Troye’s rich vocals. Call it a promise – there’s even bigger things to come. Joburg born, Perth raised, this 20 year old prdoigy is going to have the best. year. ever.  Originally starting out in acting, with a strong presence on YouTube, Troye Sivan just released his first studio album “Blue Neighbourhood” earlier this month.  If you haven’t already heard his name from peaking on the Billboard 200 this summer, you will soon enough.  With a powerhouse of CAPITALIZED tracks from “YOUTH” to “TALK ME DOWN,” it seems Troye’s been cleaning up since day one.  With a tour set for 2016 across the US, Australia, Canada, the UK and Europe, many of the gigs have already sold out – sorry Webster Hall fans.  Get “WILD” for Sivan’s music and turn up the volume.

Iration : Hotting Up

This past week, Scrimshaw had the pleasure of speaking with Adam Taylor, from the reggae, dub, rock band, Iration.  Iration just finished up their amazing Hotting Up tour and Adam had some time between surf sessions on the North Shore of Oahu to give us a little insight into the band and their recent tour.

Hey Adam, how is the surf today?

Hey man, it’s been pumping here recently.  I’m currently changing spots and heading to Rocky Point.  Today it’s been medium sized, but it’s supposed to get to 25 ft. later today.  It’s a little crowded today because its Saturday and Billabong Pipeline Masters is going off, but there’s always waves to be had.

Sick, is the band going to play out there at all or are you guys just surfing.

Two of us are on the big island, and some are still in Cali, but I think we are going to play here in February though.

Tight, maybe we can make our way out there for that.  We just saw you play in San Diego at the Del Mar show.

Yea man that was a really fun one.  That was our 3rd time playing that outdoor venue.  It’s cool because that was technically not even considered part of the tour.  It was a special show for us because it was the last show of the year, except something possibly brewing in Mexico for us with Slightly Stoopid, Pepper (Check out Scrimshaw's interview with Pepper!), SOJA at some small festival.  Should be good.

Whoa, that sounds like such a fun line up.  Would be such an awesome way to end the year after a big tour and the Hotting Up album coming out.  How was the tour? You guys seemed to be on the road and doing a ton of festivals.

Yea we were all over.  The cool thing with the festivals though, is that they are mostly on the weekends, which means we have Monday through Thursday off.  Then we normally play the weekend and cruise out on Sunday.  But yea, we did a ton of festivals then did the Hotting Up tour which was really successful.

That’s so sick.  This album seemed to be something special for you guys.  I noticed that you guys brought in some bigger names to help produce and mix the CD (David Manzoor, Mark Needham, and Will Brierre).  A bunch of new writing with a new team behind the scenes produced this killer album, how was it working with everyone?

Yea dude, this was so exciting.  This is the first time we really used a producer let alone this type of producer.  We picked David because he was a hip hop producer (has worked with Lupe Fiasco, R.Kelly and Lloyd).  We wanted bigger beats and a harder sounding mix to complement our past work which is a little softer.  He added a cool element to our sound which added this edgier up tempo style.  It was exciting and fun to play.  I felt like our set just needed a few more songs for us to be able to cherry pick from our catalogue to produce a killer concert. And we got it!

I could definitely tell you had an amazing blend between your new music and your classics.  It’s cool to see where you guys came from, to working with these big producers and mixers.

It is crazy because the whole band went to high school together on the big Island of Hawaii.  We didn’t start the band until we all moved to California for college.  We picked up Micah Brown (lead singer) recently, who has been an awesome addition.  It’s funny because we played in school and it was always kind of a hobby, but then we got a little momentum and we felt the timing was right to try and pursue it as a career.  Perfect time to roll the dice and go for it.

Yea, you guys pretty much have one of the best real jobs out there.

It’s funny, one of my best friends is a doctor, and he still tells me that I won the lottery.  The grass is always greener, but I feel so lucky to do what I do.

What is also cool is that you also created this extremely loyal fan base.

It’s absolutely crazy who we have met at our shows, and the people who are doing full blown road trips, traveling overnight, to come see us play, because we are their favorite band.  That has an incredible impact on us and it still blows my mind every time.

It must be such a unique feeling getting that response.

Yea we are definitely stoked because our fans aren’t just one demographic.  We span a large age demographic.  We have everything from little kids to older couples.  We have a lot of people who listen to Iration, and it’s always cool to see who comes out.

Sweet, and with this new edgier sound it obviously seems that people are responding well to it.  Now did you help write any songs, or how does that process work with you guys?

Every song is a little different.  Typically, Micah will write on the acoustic guitar and maybe hum the verse or just get a melody or a hook.  We will listen to it as a group and adapt as a band.  We never try and limit ourselves.  We let the song dictate how we are going to play it.  Sometimes we write a beat and then sometimes Micah will get inspired from that.  The songs that come out the best are when we have a couple hooks or beats that are circling us and then together we are all zone in and are like...that one, and we create something really amazing as a band.

As a band, you all really have a solid element.  Did you always play the bass for the band?  Have you played anything else?

Actually yes, the first instrument I ever played was the clarinet as part of an orchestra on Oahu.  I played a little guitar, ukulele, and keyboard.  I actually only picked up the bass because Joe, our Drummer, and Rory who plays keyboard for Rebelution, were playing, and it sounded really cool, and I wanted to get in on their sound.  So I went back to Hawaii, bought a bass, taught myself how to play, and then came back and was like, hey guys I bought a bass.  Ha, I’ve never taken any lessons, which is actually how we all kind of are, self-taught.  It’s funny because we may not play the way we do with other people, but when we are together we really jam so fluidly.  Together we are a great fit.

Right, you guys have such a good grove playing off of each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

Absolutely, it really is such a pleasure all playing together.

Hey man, well I appreciate you taking the time to talk to us.  Don’t want to take any waves away from you, enjoy the surf today, Adam.

Yea man, I’m heading out to go get some solid waves.  Have a good one, great speaking with you!
